For some reason on automatic mode PS3 don't choose FULL duplex mode for internet connection, causing FTP/Internet speeds to be abysmal, and making internet connection slow in general. Since PS3 support up to Gigabit standard, it's important to create proper configuration. Because PS3 likes to configer legacy half duplex connection, probably for better compatibility.

So, configuration goes as follows:

Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection > Select settings method [CUSTOM] > Connection Method [WIRED] > Ethernet operation method [MANUAL SETTINGS] > Speed and Duplex [safe bet is 100BasetT FULL DUPLEX, if you really know that you router supports Gigabit, then choose - 1000BaseT FULL DUPLEX] > IP address [AUTO] > DHCP HOST [DO NOT SET] > DNS [AUTO] > MTU [AUTO], PROXY [ DO NOT USE] > UPnP [ ENABLE] > Finish.

Troubleshooting:

Double check you router standard before choosing Speed and Duplex settings, to avoid compatibility problems. For example, if you configure PS3 to Gigabit (1000Baset) network and you use Megabit router, then you will receive connection error. But if you configure PS3 to Megabit(100Baset) network with Gigabit router it will still work, because router support multiple standards.

To find what speeds router supports, you have to look at the manual or search it's model and look at specifications sheet.

Speed over Gigabit LAN is about 125MB/s.
I don't have caption card to make cool pictures. :)
