Nintendo has won brownie points from players recently for its avid support of cross-platform play (cross-play). In addition to supporting cross-play between the Switch version of Minecraft and other systems, it also allows cross-play between Fortnite on Switch and Xbox One. However, it seems that the company wants to ramp up its cross-play plans in future.

Speaking during the 78th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, former Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima and senior executive officer Susumu Tanaka offered their thoughts on the ongoing cross-play debate. Although Kimishima declined to discuss Minecraft or Fortnite specifically as these are not Nintendo titles, the ex-Nintendo boss did say “our fundamental way of thinking about offering Nintendo titles on other platforms remains unchanged.”

Tanaka then elaborated on this point, saying that Nintendo is “inclined to do what we can to help publishers incorporate crossplay when that is what they want.” Tanaka noted that cross-play comes from cooperation between platform holders and the game’s publisher. “Other parties” have a say in whether it will happen or not, but Nintendo remains engaged in discussions.

Nintendo Switch fans appear to be delighted by the comments from Kimishima and Tanaka. Although the Nintendo Switch is a blinding success and the console has sold almost 15 million units already, it still trails behind the PS4 and Xbox One in combined sales. Any console is also dwarfed by the amount of people who own mobile devices. This means that when a game is multi-platform it is quite likely that a Nintendo Switch player will have friends on other platforms who also play it. As such, it’s helpful that they will still be able to play together.

Others, though, are celebrating this as a smart business move, rather than a fantastic thing for players. PS4 platform holder Sony has repeatedly dropped the ball on the matter of cross-play, most recently catching flak for not blocking Fortnite players on Switch from using their accounts if they had previously logged into the PS4 version of the game. The debate has gotten incredibly heated and some have vowed to steer clear of Sony until it changes its stance on the matter.

Nintendo (and Microsoft) meanwhile have established themselves as supporters of cross-play, including the release of a particularly pointed Minecraft cross-play ad. At this point it’s far too soon to say whether the positivity surrounding Nintendo‘s cross-play position has made a different where it counts (i.e. extra console sales), but it is winning some cheers online at least.
